Musculoskeletal problems are widespread among musicians and artists at every level. Most are preventable with the right attention early on.

Up to 87%
of adult classical musicians report playing-related musculoskeletal disorders across reviewed studies
Zaza C. Playing-related musculoskeletal disorders in musicians: a systematic review of incidence and prevalence. CMAJ. 1998;158(8):1019-25.

Common questions.

Who should get an injury prevention screening?

Anyone who uses their body repetitively for their craft. If you play an instrument, draw for hours, or perform regularly, you are a candidate. You do not have to be in pain to benefit.

Does the ultrasound screening hurt?

Not at all. It is completely painless and safe. We apply gel to the skin and use a handheld probe to look at your tissues in real time.

What does the screening cover?

We focus on the joints and muscles that are relevant for you and what you do. We look at your tissues while they move to catch things that would not show up on a standard physical exam.

How is this different from seeing a regular doctor?

Not all physicians are able to provide musculoskeletal ultrasound screening in a standard visit. We are also physical therapy specialists trained specifically to assess movement, tissue health, and overuse patterns in performing and creative professionals.

Injury Prevention Screening for Musicians and Artists

Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging

Ultrasound imaging uses harmless sound waves to create a live picture of your muscles, tendons, and joints while they move. Unlike an MRI, it shows your body in motion so we can see how your tissues respond in real time. It is completely safe, painless, and involves no radiation.

This kind of screening can reveal things that don't show up on a standard physical exam, including early signs of tendon stress, movement restrictions, or tissue changes that haven't become painful yet. It is also useful at confirming suspected injuries.

The screening covers the shoulders and elbows. Gel will be applied directly to the skin in those areas. We recommend wearing a sleeveless top or loose clothing that can be easily stretched or moved aside. If needed, gowns that unbutton around the shoulder will be available.

If the idea of watching your own muscles and joints under ultrasound feels uncomfortable, or if you would simply prefer a regular physical examination without imaging, just let us know. Either option works and there is no pressure either way.
